Breaking the Silence

Our country, city, and church are wrestling with the reality of racism in America and our role in it.  Breaking the Silence, a Justice & Peace Ministry Team (JPMT) ministry, offers a safe environment for participants to share authentic thoughts and feelings without judgment, criticism or condemnation. Through discussion, videos and presentations, the group discusses race from personal perspectives and strategizes ways to bring about equity for all people. The group meets virtually throughout the year. Upcoming events are below.

LOUDMOUTH

February 6 & 13 at 7 PM

Rabble rouser or activist? Opportunist or trailblazer? During his six-decade journey from pastoral prodigy to racial justice firebrand to elder media statesman, the Reverend Al Sharpton has been a polarizing figure on the national stage. Loudmouth is the definitive look at his life and battles, featuring former President Barack Obama, Reverend Jesse Jackson, and Senator Chuck Schumer.

This documentary is two hours long so we will do approximately half of it each week to allow for discussion. Contact Rev. Elethia for the Zoom link.

THE COLOR OF COMPROMISE

February 25, March 11 & 25, April 8 & 22, 2-3:30 PM

This five-week short videos series is facilitated by Dr. Debbie Holliday. It highlights the obvious ways people of faith have actively worked against racial justice, as well as the complicit silence of racial moderates and it identifies the cultural and institutional tables that must be flipped to bring about progress. Author, theologian and historian Jemar Tisby provides an in-depth diagnosis for a racially divided American church and suggests ways to foster a more equitable and inclusive environment among God’s people. He calls on Christians to take full responsibility for our complicity in white supremacy, and to commit to changing America. Contact Rev. Elethia for the Zoom link.
