UCP is continually giving its time and money to a variety of programs and organizations that support people in need.  Our involvement in local, regional, national and international mission work includes:

The Closet -- A nonprofit thrift shop in the heart of historic downtown Herndon, The Closet was founded in 1974 by a handful of churches to assist low-income families. It has become a significant resource in the Northern Virginia area as a source of low-cost clothing and household necessities for those on a tight budget. The Closet also gives away clothing to needy individuals and uses income to support worthwhile community programs.

Food and Friends -- The mission of Food & Friends is to foster a community caring for men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-challenging illnesses by preparing and delivering specialized meals and groceries in conjunction with nutrition counseling.
Friendly Instant Sympathetic Help (FISH) -- is a volunteer, non-sectarian, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to helping people meet emergencies and short-term needs. FISH has assisted Herndon-Reston residents since 1969 by responding to requests for rent, transportation to medical appointments, furniture, utilities, medical items (including prescriptions) and other short term emergency needs.
Global Ministries -- As a combined initiative of CC(DOC) and UCC, Global Ministries is committed to a shared life in Christ and to an ecumenical global sharing of resources and prophetic vision of a just and peaceful world order, joining with God’s concern for the poor and oppressed. UCP works with the Global Ministries on Haiti Relief and other initiatives.
Habitat for Humanity -- As a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian ministry, the Habitat for Humanity is founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live. Building with people in need regardless of race or religion, Habitat welcomes volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds.  UCP has been active in local Habitat projects to help low-income families build or refurbish homes and has donated cash.
Heifer International -- Heifer’s mission is to work with communities to end hunger and poverty and to care for the earth.  Heifer's strategy is to “pass on the gift”, by teaching people to share their animals’ offspring with others – along with their knowledge, resources, and skills.  This simple idea of giving families a source of food rather than short-term relief has continued for over 60 years. Today, millions of families in 128 countries have been given the gifts of self-reliance and hope.
Jeannie Schmidt Free Clinic (JSFC) -- JSFC provides free health services to patients with no insurance and a household income of 200% or less of the federal poverty level.   Services include non-emergency care for children in Fairfax County and full medical care for adults with high blood pressure or diabetes in Herndon, Reston, Chantilly
or Centreville.
Kairos Prison Ministry -- Kairos is a not-for-profit corporation addressing the spiritual needs of incarcerated men, women and children, their families and to those who work in the prison environment. The mission of Kairos is to bring Christ's love and forgiveness to all incarcerated individuals, their families and those who work with them, and to assist in the transition of becoming a productive citizen.  UCP members work actively in the program.
Kids R First -- As a non-profit organization of community volunteers, Kids R First believes that children are our most important investment for the future.  Founded in 1995, Kids R First provides children from families in need with supplies for each new school year.  Also, it provides mini-scholarships for College or Career Bound youth.  Both programs help to lay a greater foundation for organizational skills, academic success with enhanced self esteem and opportunities for success beyond high school.
Rebuilding Together -- Rebuilding Together is the nation’s leading nonprofit working to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize communities. Our network of more than 200 affiliates provides free rehabilitation and critical repairs to the homes of low-income Americans.  With a vision of a safe and healthy home for every person, Rebuilding Together brings together volunteers and communities to improve the homes and lives of homeowners in need.
So Others Might Eat (SOME) -- SOME has served the District of Columbia for nearly 40 years, working to meet the most basic needs of our city’s homeless and poor citizens, empower those who are ready to make real and lasting changes in their lives and advocate for stronger governmental solutions to poverty and homelessness in Washington, DC.  SOME is an interfaith, community-based organization that meets the immediate daily needs of the people we serve with food, clothing, and health care, while striving to break the cycle of homelessness.
